Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group to be offered in Enfield
Beginning Tuesday, September 20 at 1 p.m., the Enfield Senior Center (299 Elm St.) will be hosting an Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group, led by Heather Turton, Social Services Director at Bickford Health Care Center in Windsor Locks, along with Lee Almand, Community Relations Liaison at Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut, Inc. The group will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of every month.
The demands placed upon a caregiver for someone suffering from Alzheimer's can be very overwhelming, and the stress can cause damage to both their physical and mental health. It is important to know that you are not alone. A caregiver support group allows you the opportunity to meet and talk with others who are experiencing the same types of challenges and stressors. Others in the group can provide emotional support and possible solutions to your questions and problems. You will also have the opportunity to share your experiences and help others.
The Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group is free and open to the community. For more information, contact the Enfield Senior Center at (860) 763-7426, or Heather Turton at Bickford Health Care Center at (860) 623-4351.
Duncan Hunter receives Professional Certification
Bickford Health Care Center Administrator, Duncan Hunter, received his Professional Certification from the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA) in the area of nursing home administration. The professional certification process prepares administrators to apply strategies that are congruent with an organization's mission, vision & values, and helps ensure a higher quality of care within a facility with fewer deficiencies.
To gain certification, Duncan successfully completed a 200-question, two-part exam in May, which draws directly on an administrator's experience and knowledge. The first part involved such questions as health care facility finance, physical environment and general health care. The second part of the exam dealt specifically with nursing homes, including regulations and procedures. The certification is valid for five years and allows for two options of re-certification: either retaking the exam, or compiling 150 hours of continuing education in the field of long-term care.
Founded in 1962, ACHCA is a non-profit professional membership association, which provides superior educational programming, professional certification, and career development opportunities for its members. ACHCA identifies, recognizes, and supports long term care leaders, advocating for their mission and promoting excellence in their profession.
Congratulation to Duncan for his hard work and commitment to continuing education. His certification validates specialized knowledge, indicates professional growth and enhances professional credibility in the field of long-term care.
